At lunch time today, I looked at maps and started thinking about routes I could ride to “train” for my proper ride. I say “train” because the main aim would be to ride and enjoy it. I got a bit carried away and now I know roughly how I’ll get to my parents’ house. So exciting! So here it goes.
- Wolverhampton
- Loughborough (pit stop at inlaws)
- Lincoln (never been)
- Selby (Hiiii Mel and Rich!!)
- Darlington
- Newcastle
- Overnight Ferry to IJmuiden
- Home
Return leg (with my younger brother):
- Home
- Hoek van Holland
- Ferry to Harwich
- Cambridge(shire)
- Wolverhampton
Mind you, I’ll probably need more overnight stops than this but it’s a rough direction. And, making sure I let no one down, I’ll be doing a couple of long weekends. For example:
- Wolverhampton – Leamington – Banbury – Oxford – Cirencester – Bristol – back by train or
- train to Cardiff – Hereford – Worcester – Kidderminster -Wolverhampton
- Wolverhampton – Ironbridge – Shrewsbury – Chester – North Wales Coast – Isle of Anglesey
- Train to Oxford – London – Newhaven (le route verte) – Brighton – Portsmouth – train back
All in all, the aim is to hit the 1,000 miles mark at least. The trip to NL and back alone should be about 600. Now that I’ve thought about where I want to go I’m so excited! I’m not sure I can wait until September next year…

Take a Brompton and cycle round the deck on the ferry, then you can say you cycled all the way…
Haha! Shame I don’t have a Brompton…
Just had a quick look at your route and avoid at all costs the stretch of the A14 the runs NW of cambridge.
There is an excellent cycle path he runs from cambridge to St Ives so I would use that.
Chris
Thanks Chris – I’ll look out for that. (I need to update my routes to reflect changes but haven’t had time to do it yet…)
